Royal Swinkels is one of the largest breweries in the Netherlands, with a rich history spanning more than 300 years. Active in 150 countries, the family-owned company focuses on circular business, creating a positive impact with water and increasing local involvement. 

About the project

2BHonest has been supporting Royal Swinkels in its sustainability efforts with various projects for years now. Royal Swinkels wanted to further embed sustainability through concrete initiatives and measurements in the areas of circularity and carbon footprint, as well as compliance with increasingly stringent legislation and regulations.  

Activities

We developed the Swinkels Circularity Index (SCI) to measure the circularity performance in three core processes: circular procurement, circular manufacturing and high-value reuse. This index makes it possible to link the circular performance of the entire organisation to tangible targets, gain insight into the processes and make adjustments where necessary to achieve sustainability goals. The annual report containing the results of the SCI was awarded the Sijthoff Prize in 2021, with the index receiving particular praise from the jury.   

We also came up with a methodology for the carbon footprint and calculated the Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint of Royal Swinkels. In 2022, Royal Swinkels committed itself to net-zero targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). We assisted in this process, and in spring 2024 the reduction targets were approved by SBTi.  

Each year, we help with the sustainability reporting process and assurance, including preparing an annual report in line with ESG criteria and providing support during discussions and audits with the assurance provider.  

Last but not least, in preparation for the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), we carried out a double materiality analysis to identify the most important sustainability themes for Royal Swinkels.
